Elsie K. Powell (195-1975)
Painter and printmaker born in Aldershot the daughter of a doctor. The outbreak of World War I prevented her from joining the Royal Academy Schools and she worked instead as a Red Cross Nurse.
After the war, she enrolled with the John Hassall Correspondence School and a year later entered Farnham School of Art.
She travelled widely in the Far East and after World War II in East Africa. She showed at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and Society of Women Artists and in 1990 a posthumous retrospective was staged at the Jeremy Wood Gallery in Billingshurst, Sussex.
