Edmund Aubrey Hunt (1855-1922)

He was born in February 17, 1855 in Weymouth, Massachusetts USA.

 

An orientalist, figures and marine painter. He showed a remarkable talent from an early age for drawings and paintings. He visited England for the first time in 1873, returning in 1878 to set up his studio. His free impressionistic style found favour amongst his contemporaries and he counted the artists Whistler and Lavery as his friends. Whistler wrote in his letter to Charles William Deschamps in 1888. “His work is most brilliant and full of delight quality”. (London, Library of Congress, Manuscript Division, Pennell-Whistler.

He travelled to Europe and went to Tangier in 1896/7

He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Suffolk, then lived in Paris where he exhibited at the Beaux-des-Arts.

The museums in Leeds, Leicester and London have examples of his works.

His paintings became very popular in USA especially after his exhibition success in Paris and on his returned he settled in Hastings, Sussex, where he died in November 1922.
