John Brett Biography

He was a London painter of coastal scenes & landscapes. He attracted the attention of Ruskin with "The Stonebreaker" at the Royal Academy in 1858. Encouraged by Ruskin, he visited Northern Italy & painted "The Val d'Aosta" which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859. Ruskin devoted several pages of his Academy Notes for that year to praising the picture.
