Charles Whymper Biography
Painter in oil & watercolour, of landscapes, birds, animals & angling subjects, he was also an illustrator. He was the son of Josiah Wood Whymper, he exhibited from 1876, at the RA from 1882, he also exhibited at the NWS, SS, GG & elsewhere. He illustrated books on travel, sport & natural history, & published Egyptian Birds, several papers on Pheasantry of England, Bird Life etc., besides many etchings of shooting & fishing from his oils & watercolours. The Connoisseur comments on his bird studies at the RI in 1922 “Mr. Whymper’s work relies on an almost scientific presentment, correct to the last detail, of the feathered creatures which he chooses to depict”. An exhibition of his Egyptian watercolours was held at the Walker Galleries, New Bond Street, 1923.
