Joseph Yelverton Dawbarn (1856-1943)
Painter who was born Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Dawbarn read mathematics and law at Queen's College, Cambridge, 1874-77 and was called to the bar in 1881 but practised little as he did not enjoy the profession.
He studied art under John Finnie at the Liverpool Institute School of Art and went on sketching tours on the Continent studying under Fleury and Bouguereau in Paris, 1890-94.
He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Cambrian Academy and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. During the period 1908-12, he acted as President of the Liverpool Academy was a member of the Liver Sketching Club acting as President in 1908. He is represented in the collection of National Museums Liverpool and the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
