Edith Garner (b. 1881)

She was born into a family of farmers in Wasperton Hill near Warwick in 1881. At an early age she was packed off to London for an education and stayed with an uncle living in Bloomsbury. Her formal art studies were from the Slade School of Art in London and then Paris, where she developed her style and palette through the influence of the artist Camille Pissarro.

She exhibited 19 works at the Royal Academy, 38 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and 52 at the Walker's Gallery, London. In 1917 she married the artist William Lee Hankey (1869-1952) and modelled for him in some of his paintings. She continued painting and returning to London, she concentrated on recording the squares and buildings of London. Her painting, "Romford Market, Essex" can be seen in the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum.
