Peter De Wint, OWS (1784-1849)

The Fourth son of a Dutch-American father & a Scotish Mother, he took his first lessons from the Stafford drawing master B. Rogers, & in 1802 he was apprenticed to J.R. Smith. A fellow apprentice was his friend & future brother-in-law W. Hilton, who introduced him to Lincolnshire, which became his favourite sketching ground.

In 1806 de Wint’s indentures were cancelled & he made the acquaintance of Dr. Munro, through whom he came under the influence of the work of Girtin. He was also advised by J. Varley, his near neighbour.

In 1809 he became a student at the Royal Academy & the next year married Harriet Hilton. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807, appeared briefly at the Old Watercolour Society in 1810 & 1811, & finally re-joined the reorganised society in 1825.
