James Wilson Carmichael (1800-1868)

Newcastle marine painter. Friend & pupil of T. M. Richardson Snr. He travelled in Holland, Italy & the Baltic . Recorded the Crimean War for the Illustrated London News. Lived in London for a time, but retired due to ill health to Scarborough, where he died. Exhibited mainly at the Northern Academy of Arts in Blacket Street, Newcastle , which was next door to his studio, but also exhibited at the RA, BI & SS. Examples of his work can be seen at Greenwich, Newcastle, Gateshead & Sunderland AGs.
