George Chambers (1803-1840)
He was a Marine painter & watercolourist. He was born in Whitby, the son of a fisherman. He worked as a sailor until he was 17, when he set up as a house & ship painter. He moved to London where he practiced as a ship painter, he also worked as a scenery painter at the Pavillion Theatre. He was commission by many officers & in 1830 was commissioned by King William IV to paint 4 pictures, now in the Royal Collection. He exhibited at Royal Academy, British Institution, Suffolk Street, Old Watercolour Society & New Watercolour Society.
