THIS LIST COMPRISES BRIEF BIOGRAPHIES OF ARTISTS EITHER CURRENTLY IN STOCK OR PREVIOUSLY EXHIBITED IN OUR GALLERY.

Abbott, John White (1763-1851) A friend & pupil of F. Towne, he was educated & spent nearly all of his life inn Exeter, where he practiced as a surgeon. In 1791 he made his only extended journey outside the West Country, a sketching tour of Scotland, the Lake District, Lancashire, Derbyshire & Warwickshire. From 1793-1805 he exhibited oil paintings at the RA, as an honorary exhibitor. In 1797 he toured Monmouthshire, and again in 1827 when he also visited Gloucestershire & Wiltshire. He exhibited again at the RA in 1810 & 1822. In 1825 he inherited the estate of Fordlands, near Exeter, and in 1835 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the County. Examples in the BM, VAM, Exeter Museum, NG Scotland & elsewhere.

Aberigh-Mackay, Miss Patty (Exh. 1905-6) She went on a sketching tour in the Kashmir Valley. Exhibited in London & RA.

Absolon, John NWS (1815-1895). Landscape, seascape & genre painter in oil & watercolour.. Began career with theatrical scenery at Covent Garden. First exhibited aged 17. Studied in Paris. Exhibited 660 works at the NWS. Also at the RBA, RI & ROI.

Ackermann, Arthur Gerald RI (b 1876). Prominent watercolour painter. Studied Heatherleys, Westminster & RA School. Exhibited extensively including 117 works at the Fine Art Society, 139 at RI, 181 at Leicester Galleries etc.

Adams, Charles James (1859-1931). Gravesend born landscape painter in oil & watercolour. Studied Leicester School of Art & under W Pilsbury. Exhibited at the RA, RI, ROI, RBA & elsewhere

Aitken, James (fl 1880-1935). Fifeshire born painter of landscapes & river scenes. Member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. Lived for a while on the Isle of Man, and also painted on the continent. Exhibited at RA, RSA, RI, RCA & elsewhere.

John E Aitken (1881-1957) Watercolour landscape painter. Studied Manchester, Liverpool & Wallasey Scools of Art & under his father James Aitkin. Painted on the Continent & exhibited at the RA, RSW, RI & elsewhere.            

Aldridge, Frederick James (1850-1933). Worthing marine painter. Held own exhibitions in Brighton & Dorchester & exhibited at RA, RBA, RHA & WAG, Liverpool.

Alken, Henry Thomas (1785-1851). Sporting artist of great renown. Studied with JT Barber. Keen huntsman. Father & sons were also successful sporting artists. Many engraving were made from his work.

Allbon, Charles Frederick ARE (1856-1926). Watercolour & black & white artist. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and RE.

Allen, William Herbert RBA (ex 1885-1927). Studied Royal College of Art. (gold, silver & bronze medals & travelling Scholarship). Principle & Director of Teaching of Farnham School of Art. Exhibited mainly at the RBA (310)

Allensmore, Robert Lowe (b. 1873). Watercolour & black/white artist. Exhibited at Walker Galleries, Liverpool.

Allom, Thomas (1804-72). Prominent architect & topographical watercolourist. Founder member of the RIBA. Made drawings for many illustrations in England, Europe & China.

Althaus, Fritz B (exh 1881-1914). Landscape & marine painter. Lived London Exeter & Leeds. Exhibited at the RI, ROI, RSA, RHA, RBA, NEA, B, Gl, & elsewhere.

Anderson, George Lilley (flour c1891-1920). Coventry landscape painter who exhibited at the RA and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

Ambler, Charles Gifford (b. 1886) Born in Bradford, Ambler was educated at Thornton Grammer School. On leaving school, he designed and modelled pottery for the Leeds Fireclay Company, and studied at the Leeds School of Art in evening classes. He went to London in 1910, and did book illustrations for 4 years, before travelling to the US & Canada. He returned to join the Artists Rifles, fighting in France in WW1. After the war, he resumed his illustrative work, concentrating mostly on dogs & horses as his subjects. For a short time in 1929 he illustrated the Boys’ Own paper. He also wrote & illustrated his own stories as well as doing horse & dog portraits in various mediums.

Anderson, William (1757-1837)

Andrews, Felix Emile ((b 1888). Sussex landscape painter who studied at Sidcup & RA School. Exhibited at the RA, RI, Walker Galleries Liverpool & elsewhere.

Angell, Helen Cordelia (1847-84) Fruit, flower & bird painter. Received her first lessons from her brother William S. Coleman. Flower painter in Ordinaryto Queen Victoria 1879; exhibited at RI 1875-78, RWS 1879, London 1880, AG ; BG; FIN; RSW & elsewhere.

Ansdell, Richard RA (1815-1885) Liverpool sporting & landscape painter. Began studying painting in 1836; by 1840 he was exhibiting in the RA. He painted many Scottish subjects in the popular Landseer manner. He also painted battles & historical scenes. Exhibited at the RA & BI. Elected ARA 1861 RA 1870, President of the Liverpool Academy 1845-46.

Armfield, George (flour 1840-75). London painter of dogs, especially terriers chasing birds, cats or mice. Also painted landscapes, dead game & other wild animals. Exhibited at the RA, Brit Inst & Suffolk St Gallery.

Arthur, Sydney Watson (b.1881). Animal & landscape painter. Lived in Bettws-y-Coed & exhibited at the R Cambrian Acad.

Aspinwall, Reginald ARCA (1858-1921). Landscape & coastal painter in oil and watercolour. Lived at Lancaster. Exhibited at the RA, Suffolk St, NWS & elsewhere.

Atkinson, R T (fl .c 1850-70). Landscape painter in the manner of David Cox OWS.

Aumonier, James RI ROI NEI (1832-1911). Pastoral landscape & animal painter. Studied Birbeck Inst, & S.Ken. Exhibited extensively, including the RA, FIN, RI, DOW, ROI, Manchester Galleries etc.

Auty, Charles (exh 1881-1919). Landscape painter who lived in Port Erin & Blackpool. Exhibited at the RA, RHA, RSA, RI & elsewhere.       

Baker, Blanche ASWA (exh 1844-1929). Studied at the Bristol Academy, where she continued to live. Exhibited at the SWA, Alpine, RHA, RBA, New Gall, and at numerous other venues.

Baker, Frederick W (exh 1881-1900). Coastal & landscape painter who lived in London & the Lizard, Cornwall. Exhibited at the RHA, RA, RBA, RI & ROI.

Baker, Oliver RBSA RE (1856-1939). Son of Samuel Henry. Painter & engraver of landscapes. Exhibited widely, at RCA, RE, RBA, BG, RA, Walker Gallery, Liverpool.

Baker, Samuel Henry (1824-1909). Birmingham landscape painter who began his career making magic lantern slides. He studied at Birmingham School of Design & exhibited with the Birmingham Society from 1848 & at the R. A. from 1875-1896.

Ball, Tom (b.1888). Watercolour landscape & marine painter.

Ball, Wilfred Williams RBA RE (1853-1917). Prominent watercolour landscape and marine painter & etcher. Lived London, Surrey & Hants. Travelled in Continent & Egypt. Exhibited extensively, including 620 works at the Fine Art Soc, 163 at the Leicester Gallery, and 58 at the RA.

Baldock, James Walsham (fl. 1867-1887) Worksop animal & sporting painter. Exhibited at SS & NWS. Subjests mainly cows & sheep, but alsopainted horses & hunting scenes in a style derived fromJ.F. Herring Senior.

Ballardie, J. de Caynoth (Exh. 1887-88) Scottish watercolour painter who exhibited at the RSA & Gl.

Barbaro, Giovanni (1890-1907). Pseudonym for Arthur Dudley, still life & flower painter. Lived in London & Bath. Exhibited at the RBA, RA, RI & elsewhere.

Barker of Bath, Thomas (1769-1847). One of a famous family of Bath landscape painters. Exhibited at RA, RBA & BI. Influenced by Gainsborough.

Barret, Gearge, jnr. (1767/8-1842) London landscape watercolourist. Son of George Barret RA. He began to exhibit in 1800, and soon became known for his poetic treatment of sunrise, sunset & moonlight effects. He was an early member of the OWS, he also exhibited at the RA, SS, BI & elsewhere.

Bartholomew, Valentine (1799-1879) Although he had some professional instruction at 16, Bartholomew was largely self-taught. From 1821-1827 he worked for & lived with, Charles Hullmandel the lithographer, whose daughter, Adelaide, he married in the latter year. He executed a work on flowers for Hullmandel, and in 1926 exhibited a flower piece at the RA. He was a member of the NWS in 1834 & 1835, and was elected AOWS in the latter year. He was appointed Flower Painter in Ordinary to the Duchess of Kent in 1836, and Flower Painter in Ordinary to the Queen in 1837. He lived in London & married his second wife in 1840. They were well known for their hospitality. Examples are in the VAM.

Bates, David (1840-1921). Landscape & nature painter. Lived mostly in the midlands. Exhibited widely, including RA, ROI, Fine Art Society, RSA, Birmingham, & elsewhere.

Bearne, Edward H (ex 1868-95). Landscape & genre painter. Lived London & Dunster. Exhibited at RA, RI, Manchester & elsewhere.

Beavis, Richard RI RWS (1824-1896). Painter of rustic genre, animals, coastal scenes, Eastern & military scenes, Influenced by Millet & Barbizon painters. Exhibited at RA, RAB, BI, OWS, NWS, GG, NG, & on the c

Bell, Arthur George NEA (1849-1916). Landscape painter., Lived London & Christchurch. Exhibited very widely, including  at the RA, RBA, FIN, ROI, etc.

Bell, Lilian Russell  (exh 1899-1933) Landscape painter who lived at Wallasey, Cheshire, and London, & exhibited 57 works at the Walker Galleries, Liverpool.

Benger, Berenger RBA (1868-1935). Landscape painter. Lived Liverpool, Wales & Sussex. Exhibited at the RCA (79 wks), Walker's Gal, London (169), RA, RBA

Bennett, Alfred H (fl 1861-1916). London & Hertfordshire landscape painter who exhibited at the RBA, RI, & BI.

Bennett, William RI (1811-71). Prominent landscape painter. Companion of David Cox, D H McKewan etc. Exhibited 1842-71 at the RA, RBA, BI & NWS. Examples in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection (VAM).

Berchem, Nicolas (1620-1683). Berchem's influence on Dutch, and indeed European painting during the late 17th century was immense. His love of the countryside in his native Holland and elsewhere in Europe and the mastery of his talent combined to produce works of a kind now regarded as classics of their time. Inevitably he was much imitated.

Bernard, Adolphe (b.1812). Belgian portrait & genre painter born in Gand. Studied at l'Academie, & under van Hanselaere. Awarded Grand Prix at the Academie St-Luc, Rome in 1835. Returned to Gand in 1838 to continue exhibiting (including: "L'Artiste en Italie", "Le Chasseur Content" & "Scenes de la Vie des Brigands")

Bertram, Paul (ex 1900s). Landscape painter. Brother of Chas Pigott, & son of W H Pigott. Exhibited at Elands Gallery, Exeter.

Binyon, Edward  (c.1830-1876).  Landscape painter known principally for his exhibits in the Dudley Gallery & RA. Painted in France, & Italy & Capri, where he lived. Died in Capri.

Biondetti, F (Italian c. 1900). Watrecolourist of Venitian scenes.

Birch, Samuel John Lamorna RA RWS (1869-1935). Chiefly remembered for his light & colour, especially his treatment of Cornish woods and streams near his home at Lamorna. Travelled widely. Studied in Paris. Influenced by Monet & Pisarro. Examples in many galleries & museums.

Birchall, William Minshal (b 1884). Marine painter born in Iowa, USA. Painted all types of vessels from fishing smacks to warships in atmospheric conditions. Exhibited at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool

Birkett-Foster, Myles RWS (1825-99). Prominent & highly regarded landscape & figurative painter. Began as wood engraver under P Landells, & b/w illustrator. Taught himself to paint in the 1850s & became a highly accomplished watercolourist. Travelled all over europe & was admired by many leading artists of his day. He exhibited widely, and many museums & collections own examples of his work.     

Birtles, Henry (1838-1907). Birmingham landscape painter, who also lived in Regent’s Park, Hampstead & Arundel. He exhibited at the RA 1861-78, but more often at SS.

Bishop, Walter Follen RBA (1856-1936). Studied Liverpool School of Art & Julien's, Paris. Also lived in London, Australia, South Africa & Jersey. Exhibited widely, including at the RBA, RI, RCA RA, Walker Gallery, Liverpool & elsewhere.

Bizien, F (French c.1910). Coastal artist who mainly worked in France & in watercolours.

Blair, John (fl 1880-1920). Edinburgh landscape painter. Exhibited 83 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, also at the RSW, RI, RHA, Glasgow Institute, Dudley Gallery etc.

Blake, Fanny (flour 1812-1850). An accomplished pupil of Peter de Wint.

Boddy, William James (1832-1911). York painter of landscape, topographical subjects & coastal scenes. Exhibited 1860-90, at the RA, SS, NWS & elsewhere. A work by him is in the York Art Gallery.

Boden, William. (fl. 1882-1918). Notts. painter who exhibited at Birmingham, Liverpool, RA, RBA & elsewhere.

Boilly, Louis-Leopold (1746-1845). Prominent French engraver, painter, portraitist and characaturist.

Bonington, Richard Parkes (1802-1828). He became a student of Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1819 to 1822, where he was taught precision drawing. Here he learned the art of watercolour painting, his response to nature, and a taste for coastal scenes from Louis Francia. He toured Normandy & Belgium & spent a month in Venice before returning home to England due to ill health. He exhibited at the RA, the Salon & at many dealer’s galleries in London.

Bouvard, Noel George (1912-75). Son & pupil of Antoine B. Like his father & grandfather, he is best known for his Venetian views, which have become extremely popular.

Bowers, Albert Edward (flour 1880-93). Surrey landscape painter who exhibited at RA, RBA, RI, etc.

Boydell, Creswick (exh 1889-1916). Landscape painter. Exh at Birmingham, Liverpool, RA & RCA.

Brabazon, Hercules Brabazon (1821-1906). Watercolour landscape, marine & still life painter. Born in Paris, he studied in Rome for 3 years then travelled around Europe, Middle East, North Africa & India. There is a collection of his work in the Tate Gallery.

Bradbury, Arthur Royce (ex 1913-1940). Portrait, marine & landscape painter. Studied at St John's Wood & RA School. Served in Dorset Regiment. Lived Dorset. Exhibited at Walker Gals, ROI, RI, RBA, & elsewhere.

Bradley, William (ex 1880-89). Bucks watercolour landscape painter. Exhibited at the RBA, RHA, RI, RA, Dowdeswell Gallery & elsewhere.

Branwhite, Charles Brooke (1851-1921). Studied under his father Chas. & at South Ken School of Art. Often painted West Country views. Exhibited at RBA, RCA, RA, ROI, RI & elsewhere.

Branwhite, Charles AOWS (1817-1880). Prominent Bristol landscape & coastal painter Began his career as a sculptor & oil painter. Pupil of his father Nathan, & of W J Muller. Known for his lavish use of bodycolour. Father of Chas B. Exhibited at RWS, BI & RA. Examples in the BM, VAM & Bristol AG.

Breanski, Gustave de (c1856-1898). Marine painter. Son of Alfred de B. Brother of Alfred F. Exhibited at the RBA, RCA, RA, RHA, RI, ROI & elsewhere.

Breanski, Alfred Fontville de. (1877-c.1945). Landscape painter, son of  Alfred de B. Painted landscapes & highland scenes in a style similar to his father’s.

Brentwood, George (fl c1880-1900). English School painter of pastoral views.

Brewer, Henry Charles RI (1866-1950). Watercolour painter & etcher. Studied Westminster School of Fine Art & Exhibited at Fine Art Society (186 works), RA, RI & elsewhere.

Bright, Henry NWS (1810-73). Prominent Suffolk born landscape & marine painter & drawing master. Studied under Crome & Cotman. Exhibited in London, & at Norwich from 1848. Made many sketching tours in England & abroad. Examples are in many museums & colleges.

Brittan, Charles Edward Jnr. (b 1870). Devon moorland watercolour painter, studied under his Father. Exhibited at the RA & RI.

Brockbank, Albert Ernest RBA (1862-1958). Born Liverpool. Studied Liverpool School of Art, London & at Julien in Paris. Exhibited at RCA, RBA, RA, RI Manchester & elsewhere.

Brooke, Percy (exh 1894-1916). Lancs & Yorkshire landscape painter. Exhibited at Walker Gals, Liverpool, the RI, RA & RBA.

Brown, Robert Marsh (1886-1923). The sitter is Browns’ wife, daughter of George Daniels, a miniaturist & stained glass artist. She had previously been married to Herbert Pizer who shared a London studio with Brown until his death in 1920. Brown exhibited at the RA in 1921.                                                                     

Buckler, John, F.S.A. (1770-1851). He was articled to a Southwark architect, Charles Thomas Cracklow, & practiced as an architect until 1826. He exhibited at the R.A. from 1796-1849.

Buckley, J E (flour c1840-60). Landscape watercolour painter mainly of North Country scenes.

Bucknell, Ernest Pile (b. 1861 fl. 1919). Landscape painter. Born in Liverpool; studied art at Lambeth & South Kensington. Exhibited from 1885 at the RA, SS, NWS, GG & elsewhere.

Butt, James Henry (exh 1906-1922). Painter of coastal scenes who lived in Colwyn, N Wales. Exhibited at the RCA & London Salon.

Buttersworth, Thomas (fl 1798-1827). Marine painter to the East India Company & a sailor himself at one stage. He exhibited at the RA & the BI.   

Byrne, John AOWS  (1786-1847).  Began as engraver. Travelled in France & Italy, also painted Wales and home counties. Example in VAM Coll.

 

Cafe yr, Thomas (1817-1909). The nephew of T S Cafe, he painted topography & landscapes. He exhibited at the RA & the RBA and sketched in Scotland, where he spent several years, with W L Leitch.

 

Caffieri, Hector RI ROI RBA (1847-1932). Renowned & much collected figure, landscape & sporting painter. Studied in Paris under Bonnat & J Lefebre. Worked London & Boulogne, where he painted the fisher folk. Exhibited extensively, including at the RBA, RI, ROI, RSA, RA, Glasgow, etc.

 

Calderon, William F ROI (1865-1943). Portrait, landscape, animal and sporting painter. Studied Slade School. Founder & Principal of the School of Animal Painting. Lived, London, Midhurst, & Charmouth, Dorset. Exhibited widely, including RA (61 wks), Walker Gallery Liverpool, ROI, RHA & elsewhere.

 

Callcott, Sir Augustus Wall RA (1779-1884). Painter of land & seascapes & historical genre. Studied RA School & with John Hoppner. Travelled Holland, the Rhine & Italy. Keeper of the Royal Collection. Exhibited widely.

 

Callcott, William J (flour 1843-90). London marine and coastal painter in oil & watercolour. Exhibited at the RA, RHA, RI & elsewhere. Greenwich maritime museum has two examples.

 

Callow, George D (fl 1858-73). London painter of coastal & river scenes. Exhibited at the RA, RBA & RI.

 

Callow, James W. (fl. 1860). London painter. Exhibited one picture ‘The East Scar & Bay, Whitby’ at the Rain 1860.

 

Callow, John OWS (1822-78). Marine & landscape painter & teacher in oil & watercolour. Pupil of elder brother William. Lived in Paris to 1844. Appointed Professor of Drawing in the Royal Military Academy at Addiscombe in 1855, and Sub-Professor of Drawing at Woolwich in 1861. Excelled in marine painting. Exhibited annually at the OWS (352 works) & at the RA, BI, RBA & NWS.

           

Callow, William (1812-1908). Landscape, architectural and marine painter. Taught in Paris & appointed drawing master to the family of Louis Philippe. Exhibited RWS.

 

Calmelet, Hedwig (b.1814). French watercolour landscape painter born in Laon. Exhibited between 1848 & 1870, mainly Swiss mountain scenes.

 

Calvert, Frederick (fl 1827-44). London painter of shipping and coastal scenes, topographical watercolourist & engraver. Works by him are in the National Maritime Museum, the VAM & Walker Gallery Liverpool.        

 

Campbell, John (1757-1828). Dublin landscape painter in oil & watercolour. Trained in RDS School & exhibited at the opening exhibition of the RHA. Examples in the Nat Museum of Ireland Ulster Museum, BM & VAM.

 

Carter, Henry Barlow (1795-1867). Marine & landscape painter who served in  Navy & lived mostly in Plymouth & Scarborough. Influenced by Turner. Exhibited at RA, BI & RBA.12.

 

Carter, Richard Harry. Landscape painter. Lived mostly in Cornwall. Exhibited at RI, RA, ROI, Arthur Tooth Gall, Walker Gallery, Liverpool, & elsewhere.

 

Cartwright, Frederick William (fl 1854-1889). London painter of landscapes, portraits & rustic genre. Lived in London, Chudleigh & Harborne. Exhibited Devon & N Wales views at the RA.

 

Chadwick, Ernest Albert RI (b 1876). Highly regarded watercolour landscape & flower painter, & wood engraver. Studied at the RBSA. Exhibited extensively, including RBSA, RA, RCA, RI, Walker's gallery, London, and elsewhere.

 

Chambers, George RWS (1803-1840). Marine painter & watercolourist. Born in Whitby, the son of a fisherman. Worked as a sailor until 17, when he set up as a house & ship painter. He moved to London where he practiced as a ship painter, he also worked as a scenery painter at the Pavillion Theatre. He was commission by many officers & in 1830 was commissioned by King William IV to paint 4 pictures, now in the Royal Collection. He exhibited at RA, BI, SS, OWS & NWS.

 

Charlton, John RBA RI ROI (1841-1917). Born Northumberland. Studied at Newcastle & South Kensington. Exhibited RA, RBA, NWS & elsewhere. Studied at the Bristol Academy, where she continued to live. Exhibited at the SWA, Artists.

 

Clare, Oliver (c1853-1927). Head of a well-known Birmingham family of still life painters. Exhibited at Birmingham, the RA, Liverpool, the RCA, & elsewhere.

 

Clarence, Arderne (flour 1908-37). Painter of seascapes who lived in London & Bournemouth & exhibited at the RA Walker Galleries & London Salon.

 

Clayton, Joseph Hughes (exh 1891-1929). Lived Liverpool, Cheshire & Anglesey. Exhibited at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool.

 

Cleghorn, John (flour 1840-81). Son of an engraver & draughtsman, he lived in Islington & Fulham & painted natural history subjects in the surrounding countryside. Exhibited at the RA, Brit. Inst, RBA & elsewhere.

 

Clifford, A (fl c.1880). English School painter of coastal scenes.

 

Cobbett, Edward John RBA (1815-99). Genre & landscape painter. Trained under JW Allen. Exhibited at the RA from 1883-1880.At York AG is his "Of Heather Bells", exhibited at the SS in 1859, The Art Journal said of it: "A company of colliers' daughters with such petticoats for colour & texture, & standing on a piece of hillside bottom, rich in grasses,& fragrant with sweet heather bloom. The figures are made to tell powerfully against the sky and distances.".

 

Coleman, William Stephen (1829-1904). London painter & illustrator of figures & landscapes. Painted for Minton’s Art Pottery. Works are in the Glasgow AG & VAM. Exhibited mainly at Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery.

 

Cole, George Vicat RA (1833-1893). Landscape painter, eldest son of George Cole. Born in Portsmouth; in 1852, he sent his first pictures for exhibition to London to the Society of British Artists. He exhibited at the RA from 1853-1892 becoming Associate in 1869, and RA in 1880. His work was highly popular. His subjects were taken from England, Wales & Scotland, but he was especially fond of views of the Thames.

 

Cole, Reginald Rex Vicat ROI (1870-1940). Landscape painter of mainly views of Sussex & London, and canal scenes. Son of George Vicat Cole. Exhibited at the RA & elsewhere. Together with Byam Shaw he founded the Byam Shaw & Vicat Cole School of Art.

 

Colley, Sir George Pomeroy (1835-81). Major-general & governor of Natal. Born Ferney, County Dublin. Grandson of 4th Viscount Harberton. "A distinguished soldier and accomplished artist" (Dictionary of National Biographies).

 

Colkett, Samuel David (1800/06-1863). Landscape painter, engraver& lithographer of the Norwich School, working both in oil & watercolour. He was a pupil of James Stark. From 1828-1836 he lived in London where he exhibited at the RA in 1830 & 1831, but returned to Norwich as a dealer, restorer & & drawing master, where he stayed for 7 yearsbefore moving his business to Yarmouth, & later to Cambridge.

 

Collier, Thomas RI ROI (1840-1891). Studied Manchester School of Art. Lived Bettws-y-Coed & Hampstead. Admirer of David Cox. Hardie called him "one of the supreme watercolour painters of England". Exhibited at the RI, RA, RBA & elsewhere.

 

Collingwood William RI RWS (1819-1903). Prominent painter born in Greenwich. Studied under J D Harding & Samuel Prout. Exhibited 151 works at the Royal Watercolour Society, & elsewhere.

Cooper, Robert (flour 1850-74). Landscape painter from Brighton, exhibited at the RA.

 

Cooper, William Sidney (fl. 1871-1908)  Landscape painter who exhibited from 1871-1908 at the RA & SS. Does not appear to be related to T. S. Cooper. An example is in the Reading museum.

 

Cox, Junior, David ARWS (1809-85). Son & pupil of David Cox. Exhibited at RA, NWS, RBA & 579 works at the Royal Watercolour Society.

 

Cox, David OWS (1783-1859). One of the leading British watercolour painters & teachers, who influenced two generations of painters. A forerunner of impressionism, his later works, such as this, he called: "the work of the mind, which I consider very far before portraits of places”. This work, painted on rugged "Cox" paper, shows his mastery of painting wind for which he was greatly admired.

 

Craig, William Marshall (c1765-c1834). Prominent illustrator, miniaturist, engraver, oil painter & watercolourist of rustic subjects. Frequent exhibitor at RA. "Painter in Watercolours" to Queen Charlotte, Miniaturist to Duke & Duchess of York. (Commissioned by Duke of Devonshire & stayed for some time at Powderham Castle to paint).

 

Cristall, Joshua POWS (1767-1847). Son of Scots sea-captain & merchant. Studied RA School Founder member of the OWS with the Varleys, & twice president. Examples are in numerous museums & galleries.

 

Croft Arthur (b.1828 - flour 1868-93). London landscape & topographical painter who travelled widely to Switzerland, Algeria, USA & N Zealand. Exhibited at the RA from 1868-93 & elsewhere. An example is in the VAM.

Deakin, Peter (flour 1855-84). Landscape painter who lived in Birmingham and London. A friend and sketching companion of David Cox OWS. Exhibited from 1855-79. An example is in the VAM.

 

Dearle, John Henry (fl. 1853-1891). Glassmaker, tapestry worker & designerof carpets, textiles etc. for Morris & Co. Pupil of William Morris. Became partner in the firm & manager of the works at Merton Abbey. Designed stained glass windows at Glasgow University, Troon Church & Rugby School Chapel. He was responsible for designing many of the wallpapers for Morris & Co. although many have since been attributed to Morris himself.

 

de Grey, Hon Miss C (flour c. 1800). She was probably the daughter of Anabel, Countess de Grey (1750-1833), a good landscape painter & engraver.

 

Delamotte, William Alfred OWS (1775-1863).  Drawing master & landscape painter. Won the patronage of George III when a boy at Weymouth & paced under B West to study. Became drawing master in Oxford and the Thames Valley. Travelled on the Continent. Published  & illustrated several topographical books, & examples are in many museums collections.      

 

Dibden, Thomas Coleman (1810-1893). Often painted in the towns of N France, Belgium & Germany. Published "A Guide to W/Col Painting". A prolific exhibitor at RBA, Portland Gall, RA & Brit. Inst. Works are in the VAM & BM.

He exhibited at the RA, but more often at SS, where he showed nearly 100 works. In 1893 a comprehensive exhibition of his work was held at the Nottingham Museum.

Fielding, Theodore Henry Adolphus (1781-1851). The eldest son of Nathan Theodore Fielding, he was an engraver & landscape painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1799 & worked at the family studios in Newman Street until 1825 when he moved to Kentish Town. In 1827 he was appointed Professor of Drawingat the Military Academy, Addiscombe. His pupils include W. Callow & C. Bentley.

 

Finch, Francis Oliver, OWS (1802-1862). In 1815 he was apprenticed to J. Varley for three years & was a pupil for a further two years. He exhibited at the R.A. from 1817; elected A.O.W.S. at 19 & member in 1827. He admired Fuseli; becoming one of the Shoreham disciples.

Glover, John OWS (1767-1849). Farmer's son who became a leading watercolour painter. Founder member of the OWS. Strongly influenced by Claude, to buy one of whose paintings he sold his house. Retired to Tasmania.

 

Goodall, Edward Angelo RWS (1819-1908). Eldest son of Edward Goodall. Accompanied Schomburgh Boundary Exhibited in 1841 & was in Crimea with the ILN in 1854. Travelled on continent & in Morocco. Examples in BM, VAM, Ashmolean, etc.

 

Goodall, Fredrick, RA 1822-1904. The second son of Edward Goodall, in whose studio he was placed to learn engraving at the age of thirteen. Fredrick and his brother Edward Angelo were encouraged to paint by such artists as Ruskin, Roberts & Turner, who were frequent visitors to the house. He drew from casts & made sketching exhibition along the Thames & to the Zoological Gardens. In 1837 he won a silver medal of the Society of Arts & he visited Normandy & Brittany with Topham & Fripp. He exhibited at the RA from the age of 16 and was elected ARA in 1852; member in 1863. He visited Egypt with Carl Hague.

 

Goodman, John Reginald (b 1878). Studied under W Ball & others, also in Holland, S Africa & New South Wales. Exhibited at RA & RI.

 

Goodwin, Albert RWS (1845-1932). Painter of landscapes & Biblical, allegorical & imaginative subjects. Studied under Arthur Hughes & Ford Madox Brown. Acc Ruskin on trip to Italy in 1872. Travelled in Europe, India, Egyp & South Sea Islands. Exhibited widely.

 

Goodwin of Derby, Edward (flour 1801-15). Painter of landscape & church interiors. Exhib at the RA & OWS & was founder of the Liverpool Academy in 1810. Painted in Wales, Scotland & the North of England           

 

Goodwin, William Sidney (fl. 1870-1877, d.1916). Exhibited 11 works at  SS, including landscapes & views of Hampshire & views of the Middle East. Nephew of Albert Goodwin.

 

Gould, Alec Carruthers (1870-1948) He was the son of Sir Francis Carruthers Gould, and was an accomplished landscape painter in oil & watercolour. He lived in Porlock. Examples are in the BM & Towner Galleries, Eastbourne.

 

Grace, Alfred Fitzwalter RBA (1844-1903). Dulwich born watercolour painter of Sussex landscapes & portraits. Studied at Heatherly's & RA, and won the Turner medal. Hardy jnr, James RI ROI (1832-89).  Bristol painter of landscapes, sporting, figure & still life subjects. Exhibited at the RA, BI, RBA, & elsewhere.   

 

Hargitt, Edward RI (1835-95). Scottish landscape painter & ornithologist. Studied under Horatio MacCulloch. Visited Ireland (where this work appears to have been taken). Exhibited mainly at the RI and ROI.

           

Harrington, Charles (1865-1943) A self taught sussex landscape painter who was late exponent of the Cox-Collier tradition. He was educated in Brighton & lived in Lewes. He was killed in an air raid. From 1910-1920 he worked as a furniture salesman. Examples are in the VAM; Aberdeen AG & elsewhere.

 

Hart, Thomas Dyke (fl c1900-20). Cornish painter of coastal scenes.

 

Hayes, Claude RI.ROI. (1852-1922). Prominent and highly regarded Dublin landscape & portrait painter. Ran away to sea. Later studied at Heatherleys & RA School & at Antwerp under Verlat. Exhibited extensively.

 

Hearne, Thomas FSA (1744-1817). A Topographical artist who was apprenticed to W. Woollett, the engraver. In 1771 he went to the Leeward Islands with the Governor-General Sir Ralph Payne for 3½ years. His early works show the influence of Paul Sandby and, in his turn, through Dr Monro, who owned many of his drawings, he influenced the early style of Girtin & Turner.

 

Herbert, Alfred (fl. 1843-1860 d. 1861). Southend marine print & watercolourist. Subjects mainly coastal scenes of East Anglia, Devon, Kent, Holland & France. He exhibited at the RA, BI & SS, Works at the Beecroft AG, Southend.

 

Herring Jnr, John F (c.1815-1907). Eldest son of JF Snr. Prominent sporting and animal painter in oil and watercolour in the manner of his father. Exhibited mainly at the RBA, also at the RA & Brit. Institute.

 

Hickson, Miss Margaret R. (fl. 1886-c. 1922). She lived in Wallasey Cheshire. Painted country genre & figurative subjects. She exhibited 7 works at the RA 1882-1900; 7 works at SS 1879-90; she also exhibited at the NWS & the NG.

Hiles, Bartram (1872-1927). Watercolour painter & designer who painted with his mouth having lost both arms in a tramcar accident. Studied R Col of Art. Exh RI, RA, RBA.

Hills, Robert, O.W.S. (1769-1844). Founding member of the O.W.S., Hills was best known for his paintings of animals, & in this field he was self taught. He worked in the mannor of  & often collaborated with his friends Barret, Cristall & Robson.

Jones, Paul (d.1888). Painter of animals and dog subjects in the manner of George Armfield. Though he does not seem to have exhibited in major galleries his work often turns up in London galleries & is much collected.

Jonghe, Jean-baptiste De (Flemish 1785-1844). Rural Landscape artist & engraver. Pupil of P. van Reamble & P. Omneganck. He travelled in France, Holland & England. He exhibited in London, Paris & Brusseles. Examples of his work are in the Amsterdam museum.

 

Jutsum, Henry (1816-1869). Landscape painter. Born in London; educated in Devon. In 1839 he became a pupil of James Stark. For sometime devoted himself to watercolour, & in 1843 was elected a member of the NWS. However, he preferedto paint in oil & in 1848 resigned his membership, afterwards painting mainly in oil. He exhibited at the RA 1836-68, BI, SS, NWS & elsewhere.

 

Keeley, John RBSA (1849-1930). A Birmingham landscape painter. He exhibited from 1872 & became a member of the Royal Birmingham Society in 1902.

 

Kemp-Welch, Lucy Elizabeth RBA (1869-1958). Renowned Bournemouth born painter of animals, particularly horses. Studied at Herkomers & Bushey. Principle of the Kemp-Welch School of  Painting, Bushey. Exhibited extensively, including RCA, RI, Fine Art Soc & elsewhere.

 

King, Baragwaneth (ex 1903-14). Plymouth landscape painter who exhibited mainly at the Baillie Gallery, but also at the Royal Institute.

 

King, Henry John Yeend RBA VPRI ROI. (1855-1924) London landscape & rustic genre painter. Studied under William Bromley and also with Bonnat & Cormon. Exhibited at the RA, SS, NWS, GG & elsewhere; examples in the Tate.

 

Kinnaird, Henry John (fl 1880-1913). Painter of landscapes & river scenes. Lived near Lewis, Sussex. Exhibited at the RA, RBA, ROI, and in Birmingham.

 

Knell, William Callcot (fl 1848-79). Accomplished London marine painter. Probably the son of William Adolphus Knell. Exhibited at the RA, RBA, & British Institute.

 

Jacob Knyff  (1638-81) Dutch maritime painter. Son of Wouter Knyff. Worked in Haarlem, then moved to Paris & studied under Glauber. He died in London in 1681.

 

Knight, Joseph RI RCA (1837-1909). Manchester landscape painter. Exhibited mainly Welsh landscapes the RA, NWS & Manchester. The Tate Gallery bought a work in 1877.

 

Knox, George James (1810-1897). Watercolour landscape and coastal painter. Exhibited at the Royal Academy & Suffolk St Galleries from 1839-1859. Examples are in the Capetown AG.

 

Kobell, Jan (1756-1833) Painter & engraver who was born & died in Rotterdam. He was the younger brother of Hendrik Kobell. He engraved subjects of anatomy, navy and published in 1787 a historical series of portraits. He had twelve children.

 

Krause, Emile A (exh 1891-1914). Lived in Southport, Conway & Towyn. Painted landscapes & castles, & exhibited in Liverpool, Manchester & at the RCA.

 

La Cave, Peter (fl c1789-1816). French painter & teacher in oil & watercolour of rustic scenes in the manner of Berchem  Painted in Worcester, Berkshire, Devon & Wilton.  Friend of  Ibbetson & probably an assistant of Morland. Examples in BM, VAM, Fitzwilliam, London Museum, etc.

 

Lamb, G F (flour 1898-1908). London painter who exhibited 35 works at the Dudley Gallery.

 

Lamplough, Augustus Osborne (1877-1930). Prominent landscape and architectural painter. Teacher at Leeds School of Art. Travelled in Europe, Middle east & N Africa. best known for his Desert Scenes.

 

Lancaster, Percy RI RBA ARE (1878-1951). Landscape painter & etcher in the School of Cox & Collier. Studied Manchester School of Art. Exhibited extensively, including 110 works at the RI, 104 at the RBA, at the RCA, RE, Walker Galleries and elsewhere.

 

Lance George (1802-64). Still Life, historical & genre painter who studied under B R Haydon. Exhibited at the British Inst, RA, SS & NWS, as well as at the Liverpool Academy, of which he was an honorary member.        

             

Langley, Walter RI (1852-1922). Genre painter. Born in Birmigham, studied at South Kensigton Art School, 1873-75. After his return to Birmigham, he devoted himself more to watercolours. In 1882 he settled in Newlyn, Cornwall, and became part of the Newlyn School, which included Stanhope Forbes, Frank Bramley & others. He Exhibited in London 1880-1919 at RA, SS & NWS. Elected RI 1883. Subjects mostly scenes of fisherfolk & life in fishing villages.

 

Laporte, John (1761-1839). Pupil of J M Barralet. Drawing master at Addiscombe Mill Academy. Exhibited at RA & BI from 1785. Pub books on painting Example in the BM, VAM Aberdeen AG & several other leading collections.

 

Law, David RBA RPE (1831-1902). Prominent Edinburgh-born landscape painter & etcher. Studied Trustee's Academy. Exhibited extensively including. RBA, DOW, FIN, RA, RE,  RHA, RSW & elsewhere.

 

Lawes, Harold (flour c.1890-1900). London painter of rural landscapes. Exhibited. R Soc. of Artists, Birmingham.

 

Leader, Benjamin Williams (1831-1923) Landscape & coastal painter. Born Benjamin Williams but took the surname Leader to distinguish himself from the Williams family to whom he was not related. He married Mary Eastlake Leader & father of Benjamin Eastlake Leader. He exhibited at the RA, ARA, ROI & elsewhere.

 

Leaver, Noel Harry ARCA (1889-1951). He was born in Austwick, Yorkshire in 1889 but is better known as Burnley artist, the town in which he lived and worked for most of his life. A huge talent he started his training as an architect and became one of the youngest ever pupils of the Royal College of Art when he started his studies there at age sixteen.

 

Lee-Hankey, William RWS, RBA, RE, RI (1869-1952). Prominent & highly regarded landscape painter & colour engraver. Studied Chester SA, RCA, & in Paris. Member of the Society of 25 Artists. Served with Artists Rifles 1915-19. Exhibited very extensively including at RI, RBA, RHA, Fine Art Soc., RWS, Leicester Gall, ROI and many others. Lived in Chester, London, and Etaples in France around 1923.

 

Leemputten, Cornelis van (1841-1902). Animal painter who studied from nature. He won gold medal at Gand 1883, Edinborough 1886, Port-Adelaide 1887 & Berlin 1896.             

           

Leitch, Richard Principal (ex 1840-1875). Brother of W L Leitch. Successful drawing master. Published books on painting. Examples in VAM, BM Brighton AG etc.

 

Leitch, William Leighton RI NWS (1804-83). Scots landscape painter. Studied under D Macnee, Harbut & Copley Fielding in London. Initially painted stage scenery & snuffbox lids. Travelled widely painting & teaching. Became drawing master to Queen Victoria. Examples in BM, VAM, Glasgow etc.

Leyman, Alfred (fl 1856-1933). Born in Honiton, Devon. Well-known and collected West Country landscape painter & teacher. Art master at Honiton.

 

Lidderdale, Charles Sillem RBA (1813-1895) A rustic figure & landscape painter who exhibited from 1851 & lived in London. He generally painted on a small scale in both oil & watercolour and occasionally produced metropolitan genre scenes. He exhibited1851-93 at the RA, BI, SS.

 

Lindsay, Thomas NWS (1793-1861). Landscape painter who specialised in Welsh scenery. Worked first at Mile End, then Greenwich, then moved near Hay in Brecon. One of the earliest members of the NWS, where he exhibited 347 works.

 

Linton, William RBA (1791-1876). Liverpool born landscape painter. Painted Lake landscapes, and later travelled on the continent & painted classical landscapes, & scenery in Italy, Sicily & Calabria. Illustrated "Scenery of Greece & its Islands" in 1857.

 

Linton, Sir James Dromgole (1840-1916). Figure, portrait & historical painter & lithographer. He studied at J.M. Leigh’s Art School. He was knighted in 1885. He exhibited at RA, ARI, PRI, & elsewhere.

 

Little Robert (1854-1944). Painter & lithographer, Born Greenock he went on to study at Glasgow University, RSA Schools 1876-81, British Academy, Rome & under Dagnan in Paris 1886. He exhibited at ROI, RSW, RWS, RI & elsewhere.

 

Lloyd, Robert Malcom (flour 1879-1900). London landscape & marine painter who exhibited at the Dudley Gallery, RBA, RI, ROI, and in Liverpool & Glasgow.

 

Lloyd, W Stewart RBA (fl. 1880-1924). Landscape & coastal painter. Exh at R Institute, R Academy, R Soc. Brit. Artists (168 wks), ROI & etc.

 

Loder of  Bath, Edwin (1827-85). Sporting Painter. Son & pupil of James L. Equestrian, dog & animal painter. Terriers with quarry were a favourite subject. Enlisted in the army & served in India. Invalided out and returned to Bath where he resumed as a successful commission painter of animal portraits.

 

MacPherson, John (exh 1865-1884) A Landscape painter who lived in London & exhibited from 1865-1884. He painted in Scotland, on the Thames, in Essex & in Northern France. He also produced illustrations for the press. Examples are in the VAM & Dundee City AG.

 

MacWhirter, John RA, ARSA, RSW (1839-1911) After a brief apprenticeship to an Edinburgh bookseller he studied at the Trustees’ Academy. He was elected ARSA in 1867, & two years later moved to London, where he was elected ARA in 1879 & RA in 1893. He was a member of the RI from 1882-1888. During his early days in London he won the favour & encouragement of Ruskin, & the watercolours of this period are among his best. He made extensive tours abroad, visiting France, Switzerland, Italy & Sicily, Austria, Turkey, Norway & the USA, he wrote & illustrated a number of books. Examples in the BM, VAM, NG Scotland & elsewhere.

 

Manning, R H (flour 1840-75). Prolific landscape painter, mainly continental views. Exhibited at the RA.

 

Mannoach, Sydney (Exh 1900-17). Landscape & coastal painter who lived in London & Falmouth. He exhibited at the London Salon, the RA & the RI.

 

Manskirch, Franz Joseph (1770-1830). Landscape & portrait painter & engraver. Born Dantzig. Lived in England 1793-1819. Returned to Bonn. Painted a series of landscapes at Aix-la-Chapelle for the Empress Josephine. Benezit remarks that his works are very rare.

 

Markes, Albert Ernest (1865-1901). Son of Richmond. Began as shop assistant in Newquay. Moved to London & became successful marine painter of scenes on South coast, Belgium & Holland  Drank liberally & was colour-blind.

 

Marks, George (fl. 1876-c. 1922). Landscape painter. Lived at Penge. Exhibited at the RA, SS, NWS & elsewhere. Painted mainly in Kent, Surrey & southern coast.

 

Markes, Richmond (fl c1860-80). Marine painter. Son of Albert Markes.

 

Marney, Paul (c. 1834-1914). French painter. He exhibited at RA.

Montefiore, Edward Brice Stanley (ex 1872-1890). Figure & rustic painter. Exhibited 10 works at the Royal Academy, & at the ROI & Manchester City Art Gallery.

 

Moore, Barlow (fl 1863-91). Specialised in painting shipping. Painter to the R Thames Yacht Club. Exhibited at the RBA, BI etc.

 

Moore of Ipswich, John (1820-1902). Marine painter who exhibited some 332 paintings at the annual Ipswich exhibitions. One of the ‘significant painters of East Anglia (H Day). A work is on the front cover of D Brooke-Hart’s ‘Marine Painting’.                     

Morland, George Charles (1763-1804). Amongst the most widely known painters of English genre & landscape. A Londoner, he visited the Southern Counties to paint. A bon-viveur who often paid his bills with sketches, despite earning considerable amounts from engravers with whom his work was very popular, he nevertheless ended his days in penury. Several biographies have been written, and his works are to be found in numerous collections.

 

Morland, James Smith (d 1921). S African landscape painter & teacher. Exhibited 1882-1910 at RA, Liverpool & Birmingham. Lived Midlands, N Wales, London & West Country.

 

Moroney, Ken (b. 1949) He was born in Dublin & educated in north-west London. A self-taught artist, he is now a major force in British impressionism, painting landscape & figure subjects in a bold colourful style. He has exhibited at the RA & has had a number of one-man exhibitions in major London galleries. Recently he lived for three years in France, but has now returned to London & has a studio at Kew.

Payne, William (c1760-c1830). First employed as engineer in Plymouth Dockyard. Exhibited views of Plymouth in the RA. Moved to London by 1790. Became drawing master & landscape artist. Many examples in the VAM.
