Helen Allingham, RWS (1848-1926)

The daughter of a doctor, she studied at the Birmingham School of Design and came to London and the R.A. Schools in 1867. There she was particularly influenced by the work of Birket Foster & Fred Walker. She visited Italy in the spring of 1868, and in 1874 she married the Irish poet William Allingham. This placed her at the centre of the Cheyne Walk set. She was elected ARWS in 1875, & when in 1890 full membership was open to ladies she was immediately promoted.
