Auguste Ludecke-Cleve (1868-1957)

He was born in the German-Dutch border region Niederrhein. After training at the academy in Düsseldorf and Munich in 1901, he settled in the latter city. He added, "Cleveland" to his surname to avoid confusion with a fellow painter who painted in a similar impressionist style in his native region. He was best known for his paintings of Dutch bulb fields. In 1906, 1924 and 1926, and probably also in intervening years, he visited the Netherlands, where he was captivated by this colourful theme.
