Christopher Gifford Ambler (b. 1886)

He was born in Bradford, Ambler was educated at Thornton Grammer School. On leaving school, he designed and modelled pottery for the Leeds Fireclay Company, and studied at the Leeds School of Art in evening classes. He went to London in 1910, and did book illustrations for 4 years, before travelling to the US & Canada. He returned to join the Artists Rifles, fighting in France in WW1. After the war, he resumed his illustrative work, concentrating mostly on dogs & horses as his subjects. For a short time in 1929 he illustrated the Boys’ Own paper. He also wrote & illustrated his own stories as well as doing horse & dog portraits in various mediums.
