Henry Bishop, RA, NEAC, RO (1868-1939)

He was a very well known painter in oil of landscapes and coastal scenes. Born in London, he studied art at the Slade School, then in Paris, and later in Brittany with Alexander Harrison. After painting in his early days in Cornwall he spent some years working abroad in Morocco, and a one-man show of these latter works was held at the Goupil Gallery 1913. He also spent some time painting in the South of France, and later in his career he painted frequently in Dover. Henry Bishop exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1906 and with the New English Art Club from 1897. Elected NEAC 1929, ARA 1932 and full RA 1939 although we think he did not live to receive his diploma. Bishop’s work is represented in a number of public collections, including the Tate Gallery (3 paintings), Museums Sheffield, University of Hull, and Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. He died in London.
