Marcel Arnaud (1877-1956)

Born in Marseille, he studied at the Marseille College of fine Art. He moved to Paris in 1895 where he spent two years working for one of the major theatre companies, "Cyrano de Bergerac" on the decoration staff. At that time he met with Alain Besnard and Antoine Bourdelle. In 1906 he returned to Marseille where he founded the movement known as "Le Cénacle" with Bernard Valère and others artists including Edouard Paille and sculptor brothers Verdihan. From 1917 to 1946 he was Director of the Fine Arts College at Aix-en-Provence. He became conservator of the Aix-en-Provence Musée Granet. He befriended some of the artists in Cézanne's circle like Louise Germain and Joseph Ravaisou. In 1929 & 1936, he organized exhibitions with Cézanne. In 1948 the Louvre purchased 3 of his watercolours. In his landscapes and still life paintings, it can be considered that no other painter has come so close to Cézanne.
