Samuel Austin, OWS (1796-1834)

After a Charity School education & a period as a bank clerk, he determined to become a professional artist. He took three lessons from Peter de Wint & exhibited a local view at the RA in 1820. He was a foundation member of the Society of British Artists in 1824, & was elected AOWS in 1827. From 1829 he exhibited views of Holland, Belgium & the Rhine, & from 1830 of Normandy. However, the bulk of his subjects are from Lancashire & North Wales. His style is based on that of de Wint, & he is at his best in conveying atmospheric effects. He was elected to full membership of the OWS on his deathbed in 1834.
