He was born into a family of farmers, he became clerk to a solicitor at Guisborough before moving to Whitby in 1830. He worked in a bankuntil 1860 when ill-health forced him to retire. As an artist & an engraver he was largely self taught, and he painted throughout his life & after his retirement relied on his art for a living. He exhibited at SS& Dudley Gallery from 1858-1873, painting coastal & marine subjects, usually from the Yorkshire coast. He also copied Turner very effectively, & he was patron of George Chambers & other local artists.
